FARE THEE WELL, OBIAGELI The bell of the Department of English and Literary Studies, ESUT still tolls, but your chair did wonder in emptiness. Like a compound after the embrace of a whirlwind, the red earth of the Department keeps the footprints of those who walked upon it. Your legacy is etched upon the Department's enduring memory. But then, what are we, after all, if not market fires at dusk, flames that rise proudly in the morning only to become ashes at mid-day. As a little boy, I had thought that at the passage of great mortals, Ahọ Opi would be postponed, but it was never to be. We travelled and crashed along the road of uncertainty, but the forest did not stop breathing; mortars continued to pound yam, drums continued to summon dancers, and children continued to chase the evening. But again, you lived a life of profound impact that, in a sense, you are not dead. The testimonies of the living, rising into the solemn air of the ICC this cold evening, are more than words of remembrance; they are an anthology of your continuing existence, a chorus of voices keeping your memory warm against the coldness of the grave.
