In Memoriam

Biography of Barr. Mrs. Marian Nneka Jones, Esq. LL.B, B.L, LL.M, FCIArb, Notary Public Barrister Mrs. Marian Nneka Jones (née Eluaka)—fondly known as "Nne"—was born on May 21, 1967, in Aba, present-day Abia State. She arrived alongside her beloved twin sister, the late Mrs. Theresa Isioma Okwunze (née Eluaka), into the distinguished family of the late Hon. Justice M. C. Eluaka (Rtd.) and the late Mrs. H. B. Eluaka of the renowned Obi Nwani Eluaka Dynasty of Umuezei Quarters, Asaba, Delta State. True to the meaning of her name, "Mother is Supreme," Nne embodied warmth, strength, intelligence, and deep compassion. Inheriting the admirable virtues of her mother—an accomplished nurse and matron—Nne was, from childhood, exceptionally vibrant, brilliant, and full of life. She possessed a sharp intellect and an infectious enthusiasm that endeared her to all. Education and Early Development Nne’s formal education began at Our Lady of Apostles Nursery and Primary School, Asaba (now Regina Mundi School), where she distinguished herself early on. She continued her academic excellence at the prestigious St. Bridget's Girls' Grammar School, Asaba. Driven by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, she pursued a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in History at the University of Benin. Following the completion of her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program, her passion for advocacy led her back to the University of Benin to pursue a degree in Law. Her diligence, discipline, and academic brilliance remained hallmarks of her character as she excelled in her legal studies. Professional Career and Scholarship After attending the Nigerian Law School in Victoria Island, Lagos, she was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1992. Committed to lifelong learning and legal scholarship, she later obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree from the University of Lagos, Akoka, in 2009. As a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and a Notary Public, Barr. Mrs. Jones established herself as a legal authority. Her expertise spanned Public Law, Comparative Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Comparative Criminal Law and Procedure, and the Treatment of Offenders. An accomplished legal scholar, she authored numerous research works and seminar papers, including: The Nigerian Crisis: A Revolution (1986) The Constitutionality of the Death Penalty (2008) Interrogation and Arrest (2008) Equity and Justice for the Nigerian Girl Child in Comparative Perspective (2009) Service and Advocacy Barr. Mrs. Jones was a stalwart of the legal community. An active member of the Nigerian Bar Association (Lagos Branch), she served the association with distinction as Treasurer and Financial Secretary. She was also a Life Member of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Nigeria) and a dedicated member of the Nigerian Catholic Lawyers Association. She rendered invaluable legal services as an adviser to several organizations, including the Asaba Development Union (Women Wing, Lagos Branch). A Life of Faith and Legacy Beyond her professional accolades, Nne was a devoted wife, loving mother, dependable sister, caring aunt, and faithful friend. She was happily married to Mr. Michael Edem Jones, and their union was blessed with three daughters: Mitchelle Caru Jones, Mirabelle Jones, and Mehitabelle Jones, who continue to uphold her values. A devout Catholic until her last breath, she lived a life anchored in faith, integrity, and selfless service. For over three decades, she wore the wig and gown with honor, defended the rule of law with courage, and upheld the highest ideals of the legal profession. Though her earthly journey has concluded, her legacy remains vivid—within the legal profession, academia, the Church, and her community. As Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II once reflected: "We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love... and then we return home." Barr. Mrs. Marian Nneka Jones fulfilled that purpose with grace and distinction. Her works speak for her; her impact endures. Her memory is blessed, and her legacy shall continue to inspire generations. To God be the glory. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.
